The Honourable

The Director of Public Works.

.2000

sir,

479

Hongkong, 1st.August, 1908.

I have the honour to inform you that after

making enquiries I find that my salary of £300 per anmm is a sum on which, as a married man, it is irpossible for me to

live.

The following is a list of places at which

I enquired, and I an given to understand that others are at the

same rate.

1.

2.

Hongkong Hotel £18 for one room on 5th. floor (annex.)

Kingsclere $200 for one room.

3.

Miss Russell's hoarding house on Macdonnell Road

$215 for one room and dressing room.

4.

Claremont Kennedy Road $215.

5.

6, Mountain View. (No accorviodation at present.)

6.

Peak Hotel. (No accommodation at present.)

Cragieburn. (No accommodation.)

On this scale it will leave about $60 to $70 for all incidental

expenses etc.

With your permission ray I request to be

placed on the higher grade of £360 per annum ?

Before leaving England I could obtain very little information from the Colonial Office and I was given to understand that the cost of living in Hongkong was comparatively

cheap.

I certainly thought that the Govern ent

would not offer a salary to a married man if it were impossible

for him to live on it.
